Notes

1. The controversy surrounding the life and death of Senator Robert F. Kennedy continues, as many feel that he would have been the thirty-seventh president of the United States had he not been assassinated in June 1968.

The life and career of RFK is well covered in the files of the New York Times and Washington Post, as well as the Los Angeles Times, the city in which he was assassinated. The Robert F. Kennedy manuscripts are in the archives of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston, Massachusetts, although there is the possibility of them being deposited elsewhere in the future, as there are family members, including his widow, Ethel Kennedy, who feel that RFK has been overshadowed by his brothers, President Kennedy and Senator Edward Kennedy, in the attention and space given to both of them, much greater than RFK. See “Family of Robert F. Kennedy Rethinks His Place at Library,” http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/12/us/12rfk.html.

Two significant studies of the assassination contradict each other. William Klaber and Philip H. Melanson, Shadow Play: The Murder of Robert F. Kennedy, the Trial of Sirhan Sirhan, and the Failure of American Justice (New York: St. Martin’s Press, 1997) sees contradictions and a conspiracy to cover up the truth about the events. But Mel Ayton, The Forgotten Terrorist: Sirhan Sirhan and the Assassination of Robert F. Kennedy (Washington, D.C.: Potomac Books, 2007) argues the guilt of Sirhan, and the act as the forerunner of present-day terrorism.

Finally, PBS produced a great documentary on RFK, The American Experience: RFK, in 2004.
